Biography

Dr. Martin is currently a full professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan (USA) where he has been for the last 30 years. He obtained his Ph. D. in exercise and sport psychology in 1992 under the guidance of Dr. Diane Gill at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has published/in press over 250 research articles and book chapters. His major research agenda has been on the psychosocial aspects of disability sport and physical activity. His research has been predominately on understanding the determinants of elite disability sport performance using self-efficacy theory with an additional focus on understanding physical activity engagement using social cognitive theory. In addition, he has also written extensively on psychological skill development using a personal development model of psychological skills training. He has published extensively in the Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. He has received over $8 million in federal and foundation funding to support he and his colleagues research programs.

Furthermore, he is currently the  Editor for the Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly and was past Editor of Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology, the official journal of Division 47 of the APA. He is a former Associate Editor of the Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly and section editor for the Research Quarterly in Exercise and Sport. He is currently on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology and the Pamukkula Journal of Sport Science and sport psychology section editor for Palestra. A Canadian citizen, and former professional athlete, Dr. Martin represented Canada in the 1985 and 1987 World Cup Marathons. He now enjoys reading, running, and playing ice hockey as well as spending lots of time (when he can) with his 18 year old daughter, Drew and his 20 year old son, Shay.

The purpose of this article is to overview the development and design of an online psychological skills training (PST) program for para-athletes. Specifically, this program demonstrates how PST can be tailored for para-athletes and delivered through online learning modules. Eight learning modules on the following psychological skills is presented: goal setting, imagery, self-talk, routines, concentration, managing emotions, psyching up, and relaxation. Included for each module are the strategies by which PST was tailored for para-athletes and a detailed account of how interactive activities were embedded in the learning modules. Ten practical recommendations for tailoring PST content for para-athletes and delivering online content are also discussed. This information can be used to promote the use of PST with para-athletes and offer guidance for those interested in designing online sport psychology programs.

Sport and exercise psychology researchers produce research to help athletes, exercisers, coaches, and parents. This research, both qualitative and quantitative, is predicated on an implicit and at times explicit endorsement of a mind and an agentic self. For a discipline such as psychology, it cannot be over-stated that a belief in a mind, as well as all of the thoughts and feelings that are mind based, is critical. An agentic self is a person who has the ability to act independently, make choices, demonstrate free will, is conscious, and self-aware. Unfortunately, social constructionists often minimize the mind or outright disavow a mind and, by extension, an agentic self that can understand reality. In the current paper I provide an historical and philosophical overview and critique of social constructionism to sport and exercise psychology researchers and its mind-minimizing/denying philosophy. I also highlight research that clearly demonstrates primacy of the mind (i.e., practical adequacy, conscious causation, the cognitive niche, and theory of mind). Researchers should consider if conducting research grounded in a philosophy of science that denies and/or minimizes an agentic self and supports moral relativism, is a defensible position.

Martin, J. (2020). What Triplett never found and what Lewin never said first Kinesiology Review, 9(2), 89-91.

The purpose of this brief commentary is to address misinformation that frequently appears in many sport psychology publications. I discuss two historical giants in social psychology, Norman Triplett and Kurt Lewin, that are frequently cited in sport psychology publications. Unfortunately, the typical commentary on these two social scientists and the significant events they are linked to is quite often wrong. I discuss relevant papers that clearly document that Triplett did not find evidence of social facilitation based on modern statistical approaches. Additionally, I provide historical evidence that shows many authors expressed the phrase “There is nothing as practical as a good theory”, or variants of it, before Lewin did. I encourage sport psychology authors to, at a minimum, provide more nuanced overviews of both Triplett and Lewin in in future writings.

Grants: The good, the bad, the ugly, and the puzzling Kinesiology Review

Martin, J. (2020). Grants: The good, the bad, the ugly, and the puzzling Kinesiology Review.

Grants play a major role in higher education, including kinesiology. However, critical commentaries on the role of external funds appear nonexistent in kinesiology. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to outline the most common criticisms of grants to stimulate a conversation in kinesiology. First, I first discuss benefits of grants. Second, I examine the role of grants in higher education. Third, I discuss how external funds are not required to contribute meaningful research. Fourth, I examine how a major reason for grants, to produce research publications, often goes weakly filled. Fifth, I show how the development of grant applications (especially unsuccessful applications) are an inefficient expenditure of resources. Sixth, I discuss how pursuing grants can be detrimental to other important academy goals. Seventh, I examine how grants may negatively influence faculty and administrator morale and quality of life. Eighth, I report on some common criticisms of the grant review process and discuss some alternative reviewing systems. Finally, I end with a brief summary and some recommendations.
